But today, the stakes and excitement have reached a fever pitch.<br />&nbsp;<br />Following Governor Sherrill&rsquo;s recent "pivot" to a statewide <strong><a href="https://www.nj.gov/governor/news/2026/approved/20260219a.shtml" target="_blank">World Cup Community Initiative</a></strong>, the Newark Regional Business Partnership convened more than 35 of our city&rsquo;s influential leaders this past Monday. Representing our universities, cultural anchors, small businesses, community and business development organizations, and city government, the message was clear:<br />&nbsp;<br />Newark is ready to be the "First Stop" for the world.</font><br />&nbsp;<br /><font color="#000000">We are envisioning a city fully activated with lots of fun, flavor, and fandom. Imagine the streets of Newark during the tournament with the same electric, non-stop energy of New Orleans during Mardi Gras. Picture the Ironbound&rsquo;s soccer soul, the North Ward&rsquo;s historic greenspace, and Downtown&rsquo;s cultural power all linked by a seamless fan path. Through moderated panels, high-impact networking, and a timely keynote address, attendees gained actionable insights, expanded their professional networks, and strengthened connections across industries.<br /><br />The summit opened with welcoming remarks from Ferlanda Fox Nixon, President &amp; CEO of NRBP, and Calvin Ledford, Jr., President, PSEG Foundation and NRBP Board Member, recognizing the collective leadership in the room and highlighting the importance of cross-sector collaboration. PSEG, the Summit&rsquo;s Platinum Sponsor, was acknowledged for its continued investment in community impact across the region.<br /><br />The program featured robust discussions across the three program tracks.<br /><br />The <strong>Nonprofit Track </strong>explored the evolving relationship between the philanthropic and nonprofit communities, as well as the future of cross-sector partnerships. The first session, <em>&ldquo;Partners in Purpose: Aligning Philanthropy and Nonprofit Strategy,&rdquo;</em> was moderated by Ledford and featured leaders from the Victoria Foundation, Prudential Foundation, Panasonic Foundation, and Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation.<br /><br />&ldquo;Nonprofits are operating in an increasingly complex environment, and alignment with philanthropic partners has never been more critical,&rdquo; said Ledford. &ldquo;This conversation reinforced the importance of shared goals, transparency, creativity, and long-term thinking in driving sustainable impact for our communities.&rdquo;<br /><br />The second nonprofit session, <em>&ldquo;Synergy in Action: The Future of Strategic Partnerships,&rdquo;</em> was moderated by Mary Makfinsky, SVP, Director of Business Banking, Popular Bank and Chair of the NRBP Board of Directors, and brought together voices from the nonprofit, financial, and private sectors to examine how partnerships can drive stronger outcomes.<br /><br />&ldquo;What stood out most was the openness and honesty of the dialogue,&rdquo; said Makfinsky. &ldquo;True partnership requires trust, flexibility, and a willingness to listen. That kind of transparency is essential to initiating and sustaining impactful relationships."<br /><br />The <strong>Women&rsquo;s Track</strong> focused on leadership development and professional growth, with sessions highlighting the impact and experiences of women in STEM fields and strategies for taking calculated risks. Moderated by leaders from NJIT and NRBP, panels featured executives from Berkeley College, RWJBarnabas Health, Newark Arts, Arup, Busy Bees Learning Center, and HAX/SOSV.<br /><br />In the <strong>Entrepreneur Track</strong>, participants explored holistic business practices, time management, preemptive planning, and the use of AI and emerging tools, as well as practical approaches to marketing and relationship-building. Moderated by industry experts from BINJE and Jarkara Strategies, sessions included insights from the New Jersey Small Business Development Center at Rutgers University, ExecutiveBound, Jasfel Analytics, ZAGO Manufacturing, New Jersey Urban News, The Da Silva Team, MIG Real Estate, and Impact Consulting Enterprises.<br /><br />The Leadership Summit featured a rousing keynote address from Ronald Weich, Dean, Seton Hall Law, titled <em>&ldquo;The Rule of Law and the Power of Leadership: Upholding Principles in Times of Change.&rdquo; </em>&nbsp;Drawing on the legacy of Congressman Peter Rodino, Weich reflected on Rodino&rsquo;s principled approach to leadership and his commitment to the rule of law as a compass for decision-making. The keynote underscored how adherence to core values can guide leaders through moments of complexity and uncertainty.<br /><br />&ldquo;The success of our inaugural Leadership Summit affirms the value of creating space for learning and community building,&rdquo; added Nixon. &ldquo;This is just the beginning. Held at Rutgers University-Newark, this program highlighted lessons learned from prior large-scale events and shared ongoing preparations for one of the world&rsquo;s most anticipated sporting events. The Host Committee is proud to support and amplify that work as we prepare to welcome the world.&rdquo;&nbsp;</font><br /><br /><font color="#000000">The event explored lessons learned from prior major sporting events, including the Super Bowl, the Olympics, and other large-scale gatherings, and how these insights are informing plans for the 2026 event.</font><br /><br /><font color="#000000">&ldquo;The New Jersey Department of Transportation plays a critical role in providing safe highway access to the FIFA World Cup matches at MetLife Stadium and the Fan Festival at Liberty State Park,&rdquo; O&rsquo;Connor said. &ldquo;We have upgraded Intelligent Transportation Systems, including the first-in-nation use of LiDAR to create a 3D digital map of the roads around MetLife Stadium to help assess traffic issues in real time. NJDOT has also improved signage, upgraded interchanges to reduce congestion, and we&rsquo;re working with NJ TRANSIT on dedicated bus lanes to help ensure visitors get where they need to go safely and efficiently.&rdquo;</font><br /><br /><font color="#000000">Kolluri added, &ldquo;NJ TRANSIT is proud to be part of a coordinated effort to prepare the region's transportation systems for the scale and complexity of the FIFA 2026 World Cup, including seven matches&mdash;and the Final&mdash;right here in New Jersey. This symposium was an important opportunity to share how we&rsquo;re applying lessons learned to deliver not just mobility, but a great customer experience from the moment fans arrive.&rdquo;</font><br /><br /><font color="#000000">Amtrak&rsquo;s Hamlisch shared that it is &ldquo;prepared to play a critical role in delivering safe, reliable, and seamless travel for World Cup fans, especially across the Northeast Corridor.&nbsp; With ridership continuing to break records, [Amtrak] remain focused on running a world-class railroad, serving as a trusted partner to peer agencies, and ensuring [its] infrastructure is ready to accommodate millions of new and returning guests.</font><br /><br /><font color="#000000">From contingency planning for emergencies to insights drawn from prior large-scale events, this year&rsquo;s Transportation Symposium highlighted both the complexity of hosting an event of this scale and the critical importance of collaboration among public agencies, private partners, and community stakeholders.</font><br /><br /><font color="#000000">Gooda remarked: &ldquo;It was an honor to join New Jersey&rsquo;s transportation leaders for a productive discussion on how our region is preparing for the World Cup.
